Why we built Nija Astro

Nija Astro was built to give Telugu-speaking families access to accurate, authentic Vedic astrology tools — without paywalls, without mandatory account creation, and without the upsell pressure common on major astrology platforms. We believe your kundli (జాతకం) and marriage compatibility check (గుణ మేళనం) should be computed correctly and given to you freely.

Every calculation on this site — from the birth chart lagna to the Ashtakoota guna score to the daily Panchang timings — is derived from deterministic astronomical computation, not approximation tables. The methodology below explains exactly how it works.

Astronomical Computation Engine — Swiss Ephemeris

All planetary positions are computed using the Swiss Ephemeris (SE), a high-precision ephemeris library based on NASA JPL DE431 planetary tables. The Swiss Ephemeris is the industry standard for professional Vedic astrology software and provides planetary positions accurate to within one arc-second across a date range of 5400 BCE to 5400 CE.

For every chart, we calculate the exact geocentric sidereal longitude of all nine grahas (Surya, Chandra, Kuja, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu), their speed (for retrograde determination), and the ascendant degree based on your precise birth latitude and longitude.

Ayanamsa & Zodiac System

  • Zodiac System: Nirayana (Sidereal) Zodiac — the star-fixed zodiac used in traditional Vedic (Jyotisha) astrology, as distinct from the Tropical zodiac used in Western astrology.
  • Ayanamsa: Chitrapaksha (Lahiri) Ayanamsa — adopted as the official standard by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee (1955) and published in the Rashtriya Panchang. It is the most widely used ayanamsa among professional jyotishis in India.
  • House System: Whole-sign house system for rashi chart placements. The ascendant sign becomes the first house entirely, the next sign the second house, and so on — consistent with classical South Indian and Parashara-based interpretation.
  • Navamsa (D9): Computed using the standard Varga division of 3°20' per navamsa, beginning from the sign's first degree.

How your Kundli (Jathakam) is computed

  1. Your birth date, time and place of birth are received. Place coordinates (latitude, longitude) and the historical UTC offset for your location on your birth date are resolved.
  2. The Julian Day Number for your exact birth moment is calculated, accounting for the timezone offset.
  3. The Swiss Ephemeris computes geocentric ecliptic longitudes for all nine grahas at that Julian moment.
  4. The Lahiri Ayanamsa value for your birth date is subtracted from each tropical longitude to obtain sidereal (nirayana) positions.
  5. The ascendant (lagna) degree is calculated from the oblique ascension for your latitude and the Local Sidereal Time at your birth moment.
  6. Planets are assigned to whole-sign houses. The navamsa chart and other divisional charts are derived from the sidereal longitudes.
  7. The Vimshottari dasha sequence is calculated from the Moon's nakshatra longitude at birth.

Kundli Matching (Guna Melanam) Methodology

Kundli matching uses the Ashtakoota system described in classical Vedic texts including Parashara Hora Shastra (पाराशर होरा शास्त्र) and Muhurta Chintamani. The system evaluates eight compatibility factors (kootas) between the Moon's nakshatra and rashi positions of the bride and groom.

  • Each partner's Moon nakshatra and pada are identified from their computed birth chart.
  • The eight Ashtakoota factors are scored: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), Nadi (8) — totalling 36 points.
  • Kuja Dosha (కుజ దోషం) is determined by Mars's house placement in each partner's lagna, chandra and shukra lagnas per the classical exception rules.
  • Nadi Dosha exceptions (same rashi, same nakshatra different pada, etc.) are applied per Parashara guidelines.
  • Bhakoot Dosha exceptions are applied where the 6-8, 9-5 or 12-2 rashi relationships are neutralised by Graha Maitri.

Panchang & Muhurtam Calculation

Daily Panchang elements are dynamically calculated for your exact location coordinates and local sunrise time:

  • Tithi: The angular distance between the Sun and Moon (each 12° = one tithi), computed from Swiss Ephemeris positions.
  • Nakshatra: Moon's sidereal longitude divided into 27 equal segments of 13°20'.
  • Yoga: Sum of Sun and Moon sidereal longitudes divided into 27 segments.
  • Karana: Half a tithi; changes every ~6 hours.
  • Rahukalam / Yamagandam: Proportional divisions of the daytime period between local sunrise and sunset.

AI-Assisted Analysis — Disclosure

Certain descriptive outputs on Nija Astro — particularly Prasna (horary astrology) verdict summaries — use a Large Language Model (LLM) to compose human-readable explanations from deterministic astrological rule outputs. The AI does not interpret charts independently; it formats and narrates conclusions that are first computed by rule-based Vedic logic.

All AI-generated text is clearly indicated. Kundli charts, dasha periods, guna melanam scores, Panchang timings and all numerical outputs are computed deterministically without AI involvement and are not subject to LLM variation.
