Kundli Matching for Marriage
What is Kundli Matching (Guna Melanam / గుణ మేళనం)?
Kundli matching — also called guna melanam (గుణ మేళనం), vivaha porutham (వివాహ పొరుత్తం) or horoscope matching — is the Vedic practice of comparing the birth charts of a prospective bride and groom to assess their marital compatibility. It has been a cornerstone of Hindu marriage traditions for centuries and remains widely practised across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi speaking communities today.
The most common system used is Ashtakoota Milan — a structured scoring method that evaluates eight specific compatibility factors (koota) between the couple's nakshatras (birth stars) and moon signs. Each koota carries a maximum score; all eight together add up to 36 points. A higher score generally indicates a more harmonious match.
Nija Astro calculates both partners' charts using the Swiss Ephemeris with Lahiri Ayanamsa and applies the classical Ashtakoota rules to produce an instant, accurate guna score — completely free, with no login required.
The 8 Ashtakoota factors (36 gunas)
- Varna (వర్ణ) — Spiritual compatibility, 1 point
- Vashya (వశ్య) — Mutual attraction and control, 2 points
- Tara (తార) — Birth star compatibility and health, 3 points
- Yoni (యోని) — Physical and intimate compatibility, 4 points
- Graha Maitri (గ్రహ మైత్రి) — Mental compatibility and friendship, 5 points
- Gana (గణ) — Nature and temperament, 6 points
- Bhakoot (భకూట్) — Emotional connection and family prosperity, 7 points
- Nadi (నాడి) — Health and genetic compatibility, 8 points

What is Kuja Dosha (కుజ దోషం / Mangal Dosha)?
Kuja Dosha (కుజ దోషం), also called Mangal Dosha or Manglik Dosha, arises when Mars (Kuja / కుజుడు) is placed in certain houses of the birth chart — traditionally the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. It is one of the most widely discussed factors in Telugu and South Indian kundli matching because it is believed to affect the health, longevity and happiness of the partner.
Our report checks for Kuja Dosha in both the bride's and groom's charts. If both partners have Kuja Dosha, the doshas are considered to cancel each other out (dosha parihara). Several other classical exceptions also apply, which are noted in the analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kundli Matching
What is a good score in kundli matching?
Out of 36 total points, a score of 18 or above is generally considered the minimum acceptable threshold. Scores between 18 and 24 indicate average compatibility. Scores between 24 and 32 are considered good, and scores above 32 are considered excellent. However, the guna score is only one factor — dosha analysis (Kuja Dosha, Nadi Dosha) and individual chart reading are equally important.
Is 18/36 guna enough for marriage?
18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum. Many couples marry with scores between 18 and 24 and have successful, happy marriages. A low guna score does not automatically predict a bad marriage — other factors in the individual charts, family background and mutual understanding matter greatly.
What is Nadi Dosha in kundli matching?
Nadi is the highest-scoring koota (8 points) and relates to health and genetic compatibility. When both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), it is called Nadi Dosha (నాడి దోషం). Traditional texts consider this a serious incompatibility that can affect health and progeny. However, certain exceptions (exceptions by rashi, same nakshatra, etc.) can neutralise Nadi Dosha, which our report checks for.
Can kundli matching be done online in Telugu?
Yes — Nija Astro offers free kundli matching (గుణ మేళనం) fully in Telugu. All planet names, nakshatra names, dosha explanations and compatibility verdicts are displayed in Telugu (తెలుగు). Switch to Telugu using the language toggle at the top of the page. No account or registration is needed.
What happens if Kuja Dosha is present in the chart?
If one partner has Kuja Dosha and the other does not, classical texts recommend either finding a partner who also has Kuja Dosha (so doshas cancel) or performing appropriate Vedic remedies (parihara). Our report flags the dosha clearly and notes whether cancellation applies. If both charts show Kuja Dosha, it is considered cancelled and is not treated as an obstacle to marriage.
